Shah Rukh Khan’s King Sets Rs 175 Crore Overseas Rights Record

Phars Films has bought overseas theatrical rights for Shah Rukh Khan's King for Rs 175 crore, a new record, ahead of its December 24 release.

SRK's King Sets Rs 175 Crore Overseas Rights Record

Shah Rukh Khan’s Christmas release King has set a pre-release record: its overseas theatrical rights have been picked up by Phars Films for Rs 175 crore, the highest such deal in Indian cinema. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the action film is scheduled for December 24.

Why the deal is a big bet

Overseas distributors acquire theatrical rights upfront and then recover their investment from ticket sales in their territory. At Rs 175 crore, the acquisition price immediately raises the performance bar before a single ticket has been sold.

  • Deal size: Rs 175 crore to Phars Films
  • Break-even range: $37-40 million internationally
  • Trade rule of thumb: a film must collect around Rs 350 crore overseas to recover a Rs 175 crore rights fee
  • Benchmark: Pathaan and Jawan each grossed nearly $47-48 million abroad

The distributor math is simple: if an acquirer pays roughly Rs 100 for rights, it needs about Rs 200 in box office to break even. Applied here, King should earn around Rs 350 crore in foreign markets at the very least. Filmfare points to Dhurandhar 2’s Rs 460 crore overseas number as a reminder of how large a hit would have to be to justify this price.

The benchmark SRK has already set

Shah Rukh Khan’s overseas pull is the reason a distributor would pay a record price. The report notes that his recent blockbusters have been consistently strong abroad. Pathaan and Jawan each collected nearly $47-48 million internationally, while Dunki added to a 2023 in which his releases crossed a combined $100 million overseas. Khan has topped the annual highest-grossing Hindi film overseas list a record 15 times.

That fandom has been built over decades. Since the mid-1990s, films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge have drawn audiences in the US, UK, Middle East, Canada and Australia, making SRK a proven name for an overseas rights buyer.

What to watch when King opens

The break-even target is steep, but the Christmas release date gives the film room. King arrives with an ensemble cast: Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhay Verma, Arshad Warsi and Raghav Juyal. The background score is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

For fans and the trade, the first real test is the opening weekend. If King opens near its Pathaan/Jawan overseas numbers, the record acquisition will look justified. If it falls short, the Rs 175 crore price will remain the headline, not the release.
