Shah Rukh Khan at 61: The back injury that made him an actor

On his 61st birthday, revisit how a back injury ended Shah Rukh Khan's sports ambitions and pushed him from a Ram Leela monkey role to Bollywood.

The back injury that sent Shah Rukh Khan to theatre

Shah Rukh Khan has spent decades as one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable faces, but his route to Mumbai began with an unplanned detour in Delhi. On his 61st birthday, the story worth revisiting is not simply the stardom; it is the injury that closed one door and the theatre stage that opened another.

A sports career cut short

In a 1994 conversation with The Week, Khan recalled playing cricket, football and hockey at the state level before a back injury changed his course. Acting was not a distant dream he had secretly harboured; it was something he had already tried at school, and now it became the path forward. “I hurt my back. So I joined acting,” he told the magazine.

He studied economics at Hansraj College in Delhi and later moved into mass communication, before training with Delhi’s Theatre Action Group under Barry John. Around six years of semi-professional theatre gave him the grounding that television soon noticed.

From a Ram Leela monkey to television

His first role, as he recalled, was as a monkey in a Ram Leela. Khan described actors as “overgrown kids”, and for him the stage became a way to keep his childhood alive.

Television arrived in the late 1980s. Although he began shooting Lekh Tandon’s Dil Dariya first, production delays meant Fauji, which aired in 1989, became his small-screen debut. Circus, Umeed and Wagle Ki Duniya followed.

The screen career that followed

Deewana brought him to cinemas in 1992 opposite Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. He then took the kind of risk few romantic heroes would touch, playing darker parts in Baazigar and Darr, before becoming a romantic fixture through Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

  • 1989: Television debut with Fauji.
  • 1992: Film debut in Deewana.
  • 2023: Back-to-back blockbusters Pathaan and Jawan after a post-Zero break.
  • 2026: King, also Suhana Khan’s theatrical debut, releases on December 24.

After Zero in 2018, he stepped away, then returned with Pathaan and Jawan. Now the next marker is King, scheduled for December 24, which pairs him with daughter Suhana in her theatrical debut.

Why the detour matters

For fans, the detail reframes the journey. Khan was already competing and performing before the camera arrived; the back injury redirected an energy that was already there. That may be the real lesson beneath the birthday nostalgia: not a fairytale discovery, but a pivot after a door closed.
