How Shah Rukh Khan Saved Mita Vashisht on Dil Se Set

Mita Vashisht says Shah Rukh Khan pulled her back from a steep ridge during a freezing Dalhousie shoot for the 1998 classic Dil Se.

How Shah Rukh Khan saved Mita Vashisht on Dil Se set

Mita Vashisht has opened up about a close call from the making of Dil Se that she still considers life-saving. While filming in Dalhousie, she stepped backwards towards a steep ridge — and Shah Rukh Khan pulled her to safety before she could fall.

Her account, given in an interview with Screen, adds another layer to a film already remembered for its music and its leading man. More than two decades after the release, it is a fresh reminder of how quickly a location shoot can turn risky.

What happened on the ridge

The sequence required Vashisht, carrying an AK-47, to guide a blindfolded Shah Rukh Khan across a stretch of ground while walking behind him. It was shot in freezing conditions, and the cast’s shoes had plastic soles, which made it difficult to feel where the safe ground ended.

Mani Ratnam kept asking her to move back. She took tiny steps backwards until she suddenly felt herself looking at the sky and falling. She had reached the edge of a steep ridge, and the gun’s weight made the fall more dangerous.

“Shah Rukh’s reflexes were extraordinary,” she said. In the next instant, he grabbed the front of her jacket and pulled her up. “He actually saved my life that day.”

Vashisht believes the slope offered nothing to break the fall, and that his speed prevented something terrible.

The co-star behind the moment

Vashisht and Shah Rukh Khan had earlier worked together in The Idiot before reuniting for Mani Ratnam’s film. In the same interview, she remembered him as a considerate co-star during a fight sequence that was later left out of the final cut.

He would place his palm behind her head whenever he pushed her against a stone wall, to prevent injury. Once, a small stone slipped from her hand and cut his head, but he did not make an issue of it.

Those details sit well with the larger picture of Dil Se:

  • 1998 release: written and directed by Mani Ratnam.
  • Leads: Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta.
  • Music: AR Rahman; “Chaiyya Chaiyya” remains a signature hit.
  • Mita’s part: she played a member of the militant group associated with Meghna, Manisha Koirala’s character.

Why fans will care

Dil Se follows Amar, an All India Radio journalist played by Shah Rukh Khan, who falls for a mysterious woman hiding a troubled past. The film’s love story, its songs and its supporting cast — including Raghubir Yadav, Piyush Mishra, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty and Sanjay Mishra — have kept it alive in conversations about 1990s Hindi cinema.

That kind of scare does not show up on camera, but it speaks to a lead actor who acted quickly off it. For viewers revisiting the film, it is a reminder that some of its most dramatic split-seconds were very real.
