Shah Rukh Khan’s 61st birthday is as good a moment as any to add up a career that has run for almost four decades. A new Hindustan Times analysis puts his lifetime box office gross at nearly ₹8000 crore, drawing level with Salman Khan. Aamir Khan is around ₹6600 crore, from significantly fewer films.
How he pulled ahead
SRK did not start as the obvious frontrunner. He entered films in 1992, four years after Salman and Aamir had debuted, and first made his mark in two-hero projects and negative roles. The 2000s changed the equation. Films such as Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara and Om Shanti Om earned him ₹1326 crore between 2000 and 2007—more than Aamir and Salman combined in that window, according to the analysis.
The records behind the nickname
Lifetime gross alone can be misleading because it does not account for inflation or rising ticket prices. The sharper measure is how often a star controlled a calendar year. That is where Shah Rukh Khan separates himself.
- ₹8000 crore in lifetime gross, level with Salman Khan.
- 10 blockbusters from 64 lead films, plus 30 hits or superhits.
- A success rate above 50%—matched among major stars only by Dilip Kumar.
- 10 No. 1 films of the year since 1992; Dilip Kumar has eight, Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir have seven each.
- Four decades with a No. 1 film—the only Indian actor to do it.
- $400–500 million in estimated overseas gross, still India’s highest.
The post-2020 reset
After a difficult patch from 2015, SRK took a break and returned to a changed, OTT-era market. With only three films since 2020, he has still grossed ₹2671 crore—far ahead of Salman’s ₹902 crore and Aamir’s ₹359 crore. He is the second-highest-grossing Indian actor of this period, behind Ranveer Singh.
What comes next
For fans, the ledger explains why the ‘King Khan’ tag is about consistency as much as charisma. The next question is whether he can extend his dominance into his 60s and 70s. As Rajinikanth and Mammootty continue to lead films at that age, SRK’s real competition may be his own record.
