The balcony ritual, still packed
For Hindi cinema fans, a Shah Rukh Khan birthday has a fixed order of events. November 2 starts outside Mannat, where crowds gather hours before he appears. As he turned 61, the Bandra street filled with posters, chants and fans copying his arms-wide-open pose.
When he stepped onto the balcony — in a white T-shirt, blue washed jeans, beanie and sunglasses — Shah Rukh went through the routine his regulars know well: waves, flying kisses, then the open-armed stance. The crowd answered with a roar loud enough to show the ritual has not dimmed. He had reportedly celebrated with family and friends at a Mumbai hotel before making time for the fans outside.
Red Chillies Entertainment posted a video of the moment with one line: “The KING of hearts, with his kingdom of love!”
King’s campaign starts after midnight
This birthday carried an extra payoff. Just after midnight, giant screens outside Mannat lit up with King posters, marking the formal start of promotions. The same night, fans heard the first music from the film: Tu Mil Jaaye, featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
The track arrives with a crossover hook. Ed Sheeran makes his playback-singing debut in Indian cinema on the song, with Arijit Singh. That pairing gives King a talking point beyond its star cast and action scale.
What the film is bringing
King is directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures, led by Siddharth and Mamta Anand. The film is reportedly inspired by Léon: The Professional, following an ageing, feared assassin played by Shah Rukh and a young protégé played by Suhana Khan.
The release plan shapes up as a big-screen event:
- Release: December 24, Shah Rukh’s first theatrical release since Dunki in 2023.
- Core cast: Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi and Raghav Juyal.
- Special appearances: Rani Mukerji, Deepika Padukone and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
- Music: Tu Mil Jaaye, pairing Arijit Singh with Ed Sheeran’s Hindi-film playback debut.
For fans, the timing turns a birthday ritual into a countdown. Shah Rukh had three releases in 2023 — Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki — and has not been in theatres since. A Christmas Eve opening for King, launched from the steps of Mannat on his 61st birthday, is the latest big-screen comeback to mark on the calendar.
