Salman Khan could reunite with Sanjay Dutt in Khalnayak Returns

Subhash Ghai is developing Khalnayak Returns, with Sanjay Dutt expected back and a helpful-cop role written with Salman Khan in mind. Casting isn't locked.

Salman Khan may be the helpful cop in Khalnayak Returns

The idea of a Khalnayak sequel is moving from fan wish to development table. According to a Mid-Day report, Subhash Ghai and his writing team are scripting Khalnayak Returns, with Sanjay Dutt expected to return to the story and a helpful police officer’s role being written with Salman Khan in mind. The casting, though, is not locked.

The original Khalnayak released in 1993, directed by Subhash Ghai, and starred Sanjay Dutt as Ballu alongside Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit. It went on to become a cult classic, the kind of film whose characters and moments stay alive long after the theatrical run.

What the report says

Mid-Day quoted an insider describing how the new role is being imagined: “The role impacts the narrative. The idea is that the cop, a good Samaritan, will help Sanjay’s character. Who better than Salman to play this helpful character? The casting is not locked yet as the script is still being developed.”

Ghai kept the door open but refused to confirm anything. He told Mid-Day, “It’s too early to say anything. The scripting is still on, and once we have a complete script, we will know where we stand.”

What we know and what we don’t

  • Confirmed: Subhash Ghai is developing Khalnayak Returns; Sanjay Dutt is expected to return.
  • Being written: A helpful police officer role with Salman Khan in mind.
  • Not confirmed: Salman’s casting. The screenplay is still in progress.
  • If it happens: It would be Salman’s second film with Ghai after Yuvvraaj (2008).

Why fans are watching this one

Legacy sequels live or die on how they honour the original’s pull while giving today’s audience a fresh reason to buy a ticket. Khalnayak has that pull in Sanjay Dutt’s Ballu, and the reported cop role for Salman is not a cameo: it is described as a character who drives the story by supporting Ballu.

That combination could bring two generations of Bollywood fans into the same conversation. But there is no word yet on a start date or other casting, and the makers are expected to take a final call only after the screenplay is ready.

For now, the useful move is to revisit the original while the script takes shape, and to treat this as an early development report rather than an announcement.
