Salman Khan Said Yes to Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Without Full Script

Karan Johar recounts the one-line yes from Salman Khan for Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: no full script and no fee, ahead of Koffee With Karan Season 9.

Salman Khan Said Yes Before Hearing the Full Script

Some casting decisions become part of a film’s legend. On the new season of Koffee With Karan, Karan Johar added a fresh one about his 1998 directorial debut, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai — and Salman Khan was there to hear it.

The season begins tonight on JioHotstar, with new episodes every Wednesday at 7 PM. Johar has said this is his final official season, and Salman is among the guests sharing the couch.

The one-line yes

Johar recalled that several actors had passed on the important supporting role before he approached Salman. Salman’s response, as Karan remembers it, was short: “You’ve been shopping; come narrate the film to me tomorrow.”

The next day, Karan went to Salman’s apartment and began the narration. Dressed in yellow shorts, Salman agreed to sign on without hearing the entire script. He was also ready to do the special appearance even though he would not be paid for it.

That moment has since become a small piece of Bollywood casting lore: a star who listened to a debut director, trusted the relationship, and said yes before the paperwork or the full story was in place.

Goodwill, returned

The two also spoke about the closeness between their families. Karan’s father personally flew to Mauritius to help secure government permissions for Salman’s Hello Brother, released in 1999.

Another on-set memory from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: a camera operator shot an entire sequence in slow motion, creating a production hurdle. Salman pushed his own shoot back by a day to stay and help complete the sequence.

Why it still lands

For Hindi film fans, the story is more than a talk-show anecdote. It explains how a now-iconic cameo came together on goodwill, and why the film’s friendships still feel genuine on screen.

  • Several actors had turned down the supporting role before Salman stepped in.
  • Salman said yes before the full narration was over and took no fee.
  • He delayed another shoot by a day to help fix a slow-motion mistake.

The episode arrives as Karan Johar closes the latest chapter of the talk show. He has described this as the final official season, which makes the Salman conversation feel less like a routine press stop and more like a curtain call.

Watch the full conversation on Koffee With Karan Season 9, streaming tonight at 7 PM on JioHotstar.
