Richa Chadha’s non-fiction series Musafiri now has its musical calling card. The title track has been composed and sung by Sneha Khanwalkar, known for the sound of Gangs of Wasseypur and for turning a road trip into The Sound Trippin.
A full-circle collaboration
The project ties three stages of Chadha’s screen life to the same musical voice. She says Oye Lucky was her first film as an actor and also marked Khanwalkar’s debut. Later, Girls Will Be Girls, her first project as a producer, featured a Khanwalkar song. Now Musafiri arrives as her first as a creator.
“I love the humming, curious, sometimes mischievous and sometimes lullaby like quality of the song,” Chadha said. She also described Khanwalkar as a friend, and added: “She really is my lucky charm.”
How the title track came together
Khanwalkar said Chadha asked her to make a title song for the series. She responded with a basic rhythmic track and a vocal cue sung in gibberish. Chadha then wrote the lyrics over that track, and Khanwalkar recorded it.
- The series: Musafiri explores India’s many distinct cultures, going beyond the usual postcard view.
- The composer: Sneha Khanwalkar composed and sang the title track.
- The lyricist: Richa Chadha wrote the lyrics after hearing Khanwalkar’s gibberish cue.
- The history: Their collaboration stretches from Oye Lucky to Girls Will Be Girls to Musafiri.
Why the track matters
For Hindi film fans, a Khanwalkar title track is a signal. She is known for building songs from voice, texture and place rather than standard Bollywood polish. On a travel-led non-fiction series, that approach can set the tone before the audience sees a single frame.
Khanwalkar called Musafiri “brilliant, engaging and entertaining,” and said it helps audiences see familiar landscapes in a deeper way. Chadha’s description of the song keeps the same promise: restless, curious, sometimes mischievous and occasionally lullaby-like.
Until the full series arrives, the title track works as its first invitation: a journey rather than a postcard, with a composer and a creator who have built trust over the years.
