Ramayana: Part 2 will no longer arrive in 2027. Producer Namit Malhotra has confirmed the sequel is now planned for 2028, with the extra year being used to finish what he describes as a grand finale on the scale the story deserves.
The update comes just before Ramayana: Part 1 opens in theatres on November 5, 2026, ahead of Diwali. The first part premiered in Los Angeles on October 28, where early reactions compared it to Avatar and The Lord of the Rings.
The change matters because Ramayana is not a routine sequel. Mounted on a reported ₹4,000 crore budget, it is one of Indian cinema’s most expensive productions, and the first part already has two distinct global versions. Shifting the follow-up will shape how the whole franchise is paced.
Why the sequel moved
Malhotra told E! News that the production began as an Indian film for a global audience, but its scope grew once work started. The team has created two master versions of Part 1, with the English version receiving a separate edit and a rewritten script so international viewers get a distinct presentation.
For Part 2, the extra year is a quality call. “That extra year is what I genuinely believe we need to do justice for a film of this size,” Malhotra said. He added that the team did not want to rush the finale.
A trilogy is back on the table
The story was initially imagined as a trilogy before the makers settled on two parts. Now, depending on how audiences respond to Part 1, Malhotra says the team may return to the drawing board and reconsider whether more needs to be told.
He also signalled that the two-version approach may not be permanent. “I’d love to not have to make two different versions,” he said, adding that director Nitesh Tiwari would likely prefer to stick to one version.
Malhotra did not announce a specific 2028 date, only the year. That leaves the franchise with unusual flexibility: the sequel plan could change after the first film’s audience feedback.
Ramayana at a glance
- Director: Nitesh Tiwari
- Cast: Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Yash as Ravana, Ravie Dubey as Lakshman
- Budget: ₹4,000 crore, one of Indian cinema’s costliest productions
- Release: Part 1 on November 5, 2026; Part 2 targeted for 2028
For fans, the immediate test is how Part 1 opens and how word of mouth travels. A strong run would keep the 2028 sequel plan on track, and could push the makers to revive a third chapter. The wait is longer, but the promise is a bigger finish.
