National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar is set to direct a feature on the life of Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee, tentatively titled Syama – The Missing Chapter. Producer Aditya Kumar Halwasiya is backing the project, which is jointly produced by Bhandarkar Entertainment and AKH Ventures.
The film will go on floors in 2027, after Bhandarkar completes his upcoming film The Wives of Bollywood. Cast and other production details have not been announced yet.

Positioned as a historical drama with elements of a political thriller, the narrative will trace Mukherjee’s journey from his early academic career to his political legacy. That includes:
- His time as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
- His role in independent India’s first Cabinet under Jawaharlal Nehru and the ideological differences that led to his resignation.
- The founding of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951.
- His 1953 campaign against the permit system in Jammu and Kashmir, and the circumstances surrounding his death in detention.
Why this shift matters
Bhandarkar is best known for social dramas such as Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion and Heroine. A full political biography marks a change of register for a filmmaker whose work often observes institutions through the lives of women. It also puts him among Hindi filmmakers revisiting era-defining figures through a mainstream lens.
The filmmakers’ note describes Mukherjee as a figure “whose ideas continue to prompt debate and reflection.” Bhandarkar said exploring the life “for the first time as a filmmaker is both a challenge and demanding,” and that he hopes to bring the chapter to screen with “honesty, sensitivity and a fresh perspective.”
“Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s life is a powerful reminder that true leadership lies in courage, conviction and service to the nation,” Halwasiya said.
