Gulshan Devaiah Puts Debut Date Right: 2011, Not 2004

Gulshan Devaiah says 2011 was his debut year, not Salman Khan's 2004 Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa, and explains why he skips social media on release day.

Gulshan Devaiah: 2011 Was His Debut Year, Not 2004

Gulshan Devaiah has a new film, Little Thomas, arriving on Friday, October 23. Before that release, he is clearing up a long-running internet detail: the crowd-edited claim that he made his Hindi film debut in Salman Khan’s 2004 romantic drama Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa.

The 2004 credit he laughs at

Some Wikipedia entries list Devaiah as the DJ in that film, pointing to the song “Go Balle Balle.” Bollywood Hungama revisited the track and found a DJ on screen, but not the actor fans know today. So the publication asked Devaiah directly.

“That’s not true. 2011 was my debut year,” he said. He pointed to That Girl in Yellow Boots, which had its festival screening in 2010. He also shared a little-known early credit: an English film titled Brides Wanted, shot in Bengaluru in 2002, that never released.

“Even I have seen the Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa mention on my Wikipedia page, and I laugh at it!”

He joked that one day the question may come up on Kaun Banega Crorepati, with both titles among the options.

  • 2002: Shot the unreleased English film Brides Wanted in Bengaluru.
  • 2010: That Girl in Yellow Boots screened at a festival.
  • 2011: The year Gulshan Devaiah counts as his debut.
  • 2026: Little Thomas releases on October 23.

Why the correction matters

For fans who keep decade-by-decade filmographies, a wrong credit can silently bend the story of an actor’s early career. Devaiah belongs to the 2011 wave, not the 2004 Salman Khan film; the distinction matters when tracing the independent cinema scene that shaped his path.

His release-day habit is also a useful reminder for anyone in the public eye. Devaiah told Bollywood Hungama that he generally does not check social media once a film is out: “My job is done… it’s up to the audience to decide.” The logic is self-preservation — a hundred compliments can be drowned by one negative comment. He added that, depending on his mood, he does sometimes look at box office and business updates.

Before you repeat trivia

This is a small case study in verifying film trivia. Public wikis are useful starting points, but their speed means errors can stick for years. When a detail feels off, go to the film itself or the artist’s own statement. In this case, Devaiah’s words settle it: Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa was not his debut.

Little Thomas opens Friday, October 23 — a good moment to watch the actor’s current work with the record set straight.
