JioHotstar has announced that the Student of the Year franchise is coming back in a darker form. Student Of The Year: After Dark, produced by Dharmatic Entertainment and directed by Reema Maya, will premiere exclusively on the platform on November 13, 2026.
The announcement also marks Shanaya Kapoor’s OTT debut. Karan Johar, Founder and Managing Director of Dharmatic Entertainment, said she delivers a “powerful double-role performance” in the show.
From campus musical to thriller competition
The first look introduces the world of St. Theresa, but it leaves behind the musical romance that defined the franchise’s 2012 beginning. Reema Maya described the series as being “stripped to its bones” and reimagined as a thriller competition web series.
Maya also said the web-series format gives the story a wider canvas for conversations with young audiences, and that the show’s music was a particular source of fun for the team. The cast, she added, is young and “incredibly talented.”

Why a darker reboot is a real creative bet
The Student of the Year title became a glossy, music-led marker of youth entertainment after its 2012 release. Moving that same IP toward a thriller competition is a genuine test of how far a familiar brand can bend before it stops feeling familiar. JioStar’s Alok Jain called the reimagining “a responsibility and creative risk,” and said the team chose a direction that reflects how young India consumes stories today.
Karan Johar framed the shift as a deliberate break, saying the team is “breaking every rule” it set in 2012. Dharmatic Entertainment CEO Apoorva Mehta added that this is not just a reboot but a “bold, genre-defying reimagining” for a new generation.
What the first look tells us
Shanaya Kapoor said her character is “layered, flawed, and unapologetically real,” and that the contrast is deliberate. The first look is meant to be only a glimpse; for fans, the next beats are likely a fuller trailer and the show’s music.
