Yami Gautam’s genre shift: Nayyi Navelli nets Rs 6.27 cr

Trade experts decode Yami Gautam’s horror-comedy turn in Nayyi Navelli as the film collects Rs 6.27 crore; will it clear its Rs 35 crore budget?

Nayyi Navelli nets Rs 6.27 cr as Yami shifts genres

Yami Gautam has spent 16 years building a reputation for serious, hard-hitting roles. With Nayyi Navelli, she steps into horror comedy, and the trade is watching closely to see what the shift does to her career.

What the film has done so far

Directed by Balaji Mohan in his Bollywood debut, Nayyi Navelli blends mystery, folklore and comedy. The film opened at Rs 3.25 crore and has collected Rs 6.27 crore so far, even with Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar: The Untold Story of Ujjwal Nikam in theatres at the same time.

The benchmark is the reported Rs 35 crore budget.

  • Opening day: Rs 3.25 crore
  • Collection so far: Rs 6.27 crore
  • Reported budget: Rs 35 crore

From intense roles to horror comedy

Yami’s recent filmography has been built on parts that demand conviction: an intelligence agent in Uri: The Surgical Strike, a woman demanding her haq in Haq, a lawyer in A Thursday, and the lead in Article 370, which won her a National Award. That makes Nayyi Navelli a broadening of her image rather than a sequel to it.

Two trade views on the switch

Film critic Sumit Kadel told Filmibeat that experimenting with genres is good for her career, but added that “audiences appreciate her more in serious roles and hard hitting subjects”. His advice: choose films that bring box office success, whatever the genre.

Film business expert Rohit Jaiswal read the move differently. He said the comedy turn is a deliberate attempt to balance a very serious image; her last release Haq did not travel far, and horror comedy can add commercial returns. He places Yami in the league of actors who carry films on their own, alongside Kangana Ranaut and Vidya Balan, and expects her graph to keep rising.

Why it matters now

The shift is less about leaving serious roles and more about widening the audience base. Horror comedy is a familiar theatrical crowd-puller, and for an actor known for intensity it is a test of range beyond prestige projects. For fans, this is also a reminder that star images are built over many releases; one film rarely erases a hard-earned reputation. The collections are still well behind the reported Rs 35 crore budget, so the weekend hold and final run will be the first real signal.
