The Indian Film Festival of Perth has found its first chief guest. Vidya Balan will open the inaugural edition when the event arrives in Western Australia from January 22 to 24, 2027.
The announcement
The festival is the latest initiative from the team that runs the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne and the Indian Film Festival of Sydney. The Melbourne event is already described as one of the largest celebrations of Indian cinema outside India, which gives the new Perth chapter a ready-made pedigree.
Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM called the expansion a special milestone. She said the team had built platforms for Indian cinema in Melbourne and Sydney, and now wants to connect with a new community of audiences and film lovers in Western Australia.
“We are thrilled to welcome Vidya Balan as the Chief Guest for our inaugural edition,” Bhowmick Lange added.
Why Perth matters
Until now, the major Indian film festival footprint in Australia has been concentrated on the east coast. A Perth edition takes Indian storytelling to a new city and gives Western Australia its first dedicated festival of this scale.
The launch was announced during the visit of Western Australia’s Premier, Roger Cook MLA, to India. That timing matters: it positions the festival as part of a wider effort to deepen cultural and creative links between India and Australia, rather than as a standalone screening event.
For the organisers, Perth is also a chance to test a proven festival model in a newer audience. The language from the team suggests the focus will be on the diversity of Indian storytelling and on building meaningful cultural connections.
Bhowmick Lange also pointed to cinema’s ability to transcend borders and create a deeper understanding between people. That framing suggests the inaugural edition will be curated as a cultural bridge, not just a run of screenings.
What is confirmed so far
The programme details are still to come, but the key facts are clear:
- Chief guest: Vidya Balan
- Dates: January 22–24, 2027
- Host city: Perth, Western Australia
- Organisers: The team behind the Melbourne and Sydney festivals
What to watch next
Film line-up, sidebars and ticket details have not been announced yet. If you are in Western Australia, mark the dates. For everyone else, the debut programme will be the real test of how this festival wants to define itself.
For an inaugural festival, a chief guest does more than pose for pictures. A familiar face helps first-time events build trust with audiences and gives local media a hook. Vidya Balan’s presence makes the Perth festival instantly legible to Hindi film fans.
The challenge for any first edition is turning a strong launch into a strong line-up. With the Melbourne and Sydney teams behind it, Perth has the infrastructure; the next announcement will show how it plans to use it.
