Netflix has given Neeraj Pandey’s Manoj Bajpayee thriller a second chance at a first impression. The film originally announced as Ghooskhor Pandat is now titled Gajab Raat, and the streamer has released the trailer and set a premiere date of October 23.
The new title closes a chapter that began in February, when the original name drew objections almost as soon as Netflix’s 2026 slate was revealed. The phrase paired “Ghooskhor” — a word for someone who takes bribes — with “Pandat,” a colloquial spelling of “Pandit.” Critics argued the combination linked the Brahmin community with corruption and caste stereotyping. Director Neeraj Pandey later acknowledged that the title had hurt some viewers, while maintaining that it was intended only as a fictional character’s colloquial name and not a comment on any community.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also criticised the name, arguing that provocative film titles could hurt sentiments and create social discord.
What the trailer shows
Bajpayee plays a police officer caught between personal gain and what he believes is right. The story unfolds over a single night after a young girl is thrown out of a car in a serious condition and fights for her life in hospital. The officer’s choice can bend the investigation, and the trailer leans into that moral tension.
Divya Dutta, Nushrratt Bharuccha and Akshay Oberoi appear in glimpses, with Saqib Saleem and Kiku Sharda also in the cast. As the official description puts it, the film is “a tense, character-driven thriller where loyalties are tested, and every decision carries a price.”
From FIR to final title
The title dispute moved quickly from social media to the legal system. Here is how the timeline played out:
- February: The original title draws objections, and an FIR is registered at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station.
- February 10: Netflix tells the Delhi High Court that the makers have decided to change the title.
- February 12: The Supreme Court asks the makers to confirm the withdrawal and share the replacement name.
- February 19: The Supreme Court disposes of the petition after Neeraj Pandey files an affidavit; the new title must not resemble or evoke the earlier name.
- October 23: Gajab Raat premieres on Netflix.
Why this matters for fans
The film also marks a reunion: Neeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee are working together again after almost a decade. For viewers, that pairing is the bigger draw — a filmmaker known for controlled thrillers and an actor who can carry a moral conflict without overplaying it.
For producers, the episode is a reminder that a title is a public promise. A colloquial character name can read differently once it leaves the writers’ room. Testing names across languages and communities before a slate announcement would have saved the makers a legal detour and a relaunch.
The wait ends soon. Gajab Raat arrives on Netflix on October 23, and the trailer gives fans enough of the one-night dilemma to know this is not a straight hero-cop story.
