Sandeepa Dhar Reacts to Chumbak Memes and Online Love

Sandeepa Dhar credits education and her parents' degree-first rule as her comedy series Chumbak wins memes, discussion and audience love.

Sandeepa Dhar on Chumbak memes and her surprise comic turn

Sandeepa Dhar has long been associated with emotionally intense roles, but the response to Chumbak has given her a very different kind of spotlight. Audiences are turning her character into memes and online conversations, and she says the recognition feels especially good because comedy was not her familiar territory.

Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, she admitted she initially wondered why directors Aatish Kapadia and JD had trusted her with a comic role. The answer is now visible in the audience’s reaction to Kiran Kejriwal.

Degree first, films later

Before the memes, there was a rule at home. Sandeepa credits education with a large part of her personality and worldview. Her parents made sure she received a good education and, when she told them she wanted to act, they asked her to complete her master’s degree first. She called this “a very typical parental response” and said it shaped the route she eventually took.

She also pointed to her years at St. Xavier’s and Jamnalal Bajaj, where talented professors and the company of bright minds left a lasting impression. That foundation, she says, helped make her who she is.

The risk of playing funny

Chumbak was a leap. Sandeepa had built her career largely on emotionally intense parts, so comedy was not the obvious next step in her own mind. Aatish Kapadia and JD saw something she did not immediately see and entrusted her with Kiran Kejriwal.

The result has been affection, memes and ongoing discussion around the show. Sandeepa joked that she cannot tell whether the Kejriwal surname or the character itself fired the response. Her final word is simple: “It’s always wonderful when something you’ve put so much effort into works out.”

Why this response matters

  • Sandeepa Dhar was known for emotionally intense roles before Chumbak
  • Directors Aatish Kapadia and JD backed her for her comic turn
  • Her parents asked her to finish a master’s before she pursued acting
  • The series is generating memes and online chatter around Kiran Kejriwal

For a comic character, memes are a meaningful sign. They suggest viewers are doing more than watching: they are repeating, remixing and sharing the performance. For an actor crossing genres, that response is perhaps the clearest proof that the new register has landed.

Sandeepa says the appreciation has made the experience especially rewarding, and it has also underlined the value of stepping beyond familiar roles. For fans of Hindi cinema, it is a reminder that an actor’s range can show up in unexpected ways, and that sometimes the funniest turn comes from someone known for the serious ones.
