Pyre trailer: 18-award Uttarakhand story opens Oct 30

Vinod Kapri's award-winning Himalayan drama Pyre has a trailer and an October 30 release in Hindi and Malayalam after 18 international wins.

Pyre trailer: 18-award film opens October 30

National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri is bringing his Himalayan drama Pyre home. The trailer has landed, and the film will open in Indian cinemas on October 30 in Hindi and Malayalam. It arrives after a long festival run that has already turned heads outside India.

What the trailer shows

Set in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Pyre centres on Padam Singh and Tulsi, an older couple whose children have left the mountain village for work elsewhere. The trailer tracks the quiet rhythms of their days — small tasks, fading routines and the silence left behind as migration empties the home of the next generation.

The lead performances come from two first-time actors from the state. Padam Singh Kapri, 80, a retired Army serviceman, plays a character who shares his name; Heera Devi, 70, plays Tulsi. That local casting gives the film a lived-in texture that a trained star would have to work hard to imitate.

A festival record that speaks for itself

Before most Indian audiences could see a frame, Pyre was already collecting prizes. The producers say it has won 18 international awards so far. Among the highlights:

  • 15 Best Film honours at festivals around the world
  • Best Director wins in Serbia and Boston
  • Awards for music, cinematography and sound
  • Screening recognition in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Canada, Spain, Boston, Stuttgart, London and Birmingham

That is a strong calling card for a film without a traditional star cast. The international response suggests the emotion of the story travels even when its characters stay in one village.

Why this release is being handled differently

Before the October 30 national release, Pyre will travel to Berinag, Bageshwar and Srinagar Garhwal from October 14 to 17. Those special screenings are being run with Picture Time, a mobile theatre initiative that gives places with little or no access to permanent cinemas a chance to watch on a big screen. It is a fitting route for a film made in the mountains and about the people who remain there.

Producer-director Vinod Kapri said the film has received “so much warmth and appreciation” on its international run, and that he is looking forward to sharing what he called a “deeply personal story” with audiences back home. “I’m delighted that Pyre will finally reach audiences across India in cinemas, where its emotions and the beauty of the Himalayas can be experienced on the big screen,” he said.

Pyre is produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri under Bhagirathi Films and Mashakbeen Studios.

What it gives the Hindi film fan

For viewers who love mainstream Bollywood, Pyre is a change of pace: a small, rooted story about ageing, migration and waiting. For fans of Hindi cinema’s wider map, it offers a rare big-screen look at Kumaon and the lives of those who stay behind. The Hindi and Malayalam release also broadens the film beyond one language market.

If the trailer is any guide, this is a film to watch with family — and one that may leave the loudest silence in the cinema after the credits.
