Kashika Kapoor on Caste: Horror, Comedy and the Constitution

Kashika Kapoor's Telugu release Caste is a horror-comedy with a social context. She gained six kilos for the role and says the story is about equality.

Kashika Kapoor on Caste and Its Constitutional Core

Kashika Kapoor is stepping outside her comfort zone with Caste, an upcoming Telugu horror-comedy that pairs genre thrills with a social theme. The teaser introduces her as Gayathri, a character she says is unlike anything she has attempted before.

Two registers in one role

Kapoor describes Gayathri as a blend of seriousness and emotion, with space for vulnerability. The horror element lands when the character is possessed at a point in the film. To sit convincingly inside the role, the actor put on six kilos in two-and-a-half weeks.

She then had to shed the weight for other films, which meant moving between different looks at the same time. Kapoor called it “constant back and forth”, but said the transformation was necessary to do justice to the character.

The Constitution inside a horror-comedy

According to Kapoor, Caste draws its story from the Constitution of India. It approaches caste through the promise of equality rather than as a lecture. She said, “No person should face discrimination, exclusion or injustice because of their caste.”

The title itself keeps the subject in the open. Caste is not hiding the theme behind a metaphor; it puts the word at the centre of the film. The challenge is to deliver that theme without turning the film into a pamphlet, and Kapoor says the team has chosen a raw, non-preachy route.

The choice to place a constitutional idea inside a horror-comedy is notable. In a market where social-issue films often arrive as heavy dramas, Caste signals that the message can travel through laughs and scares. That may help it reach younger viewers who decide what to watch from tone and genre before they read the synopsis.

  • Genre: horror-comedy drama with a social context
  • Role: Gayathri, a part Kapoor has not played before
  • Physical prep: six-kilo gain in two-and-a-half weeks
  • Theme: constitutional equality, not discrimination by caste

Why the move is worth watching

For fans, Caste is a test of whether an actor can push past a familiar image. For the industry, it is another example of regional horror-comedies using social commentary to stand out in a crowded slate. Kapoor’s own line sums up the bet: “You cannot play it safe if you want to grow as an actor.”

The teaser is the first real look at how that bet plays on screen. It offers a glimpse of the film’s tone before more promotional material arrives.
