Nana Patekar, the actor whose coiled intensity made every dialogue land like a warning, died on Thursday morning in Goa. He was 75. His son Malhar Patekar confirmed the news after the actor was found unconscious at home and rushed to Manipal Hospital.
The loss has brought the Hindi film industry and fans to a standstill, not for the noise around it, but for the body of work he leaves behind: a rare actor who could be terrifying and tender in the same scene.
What we know about his final hours
Doctors who treated the actor have now shared a clearer picture of the last minutes. Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of Oncology at Manipal Hospital, told ANI that Nana Patekar sent a message to a friend at around 2:30 am saying he was not feeling well.
Because it was night, the friend missed the message. When the friend reached the actor’s home around 4 am, the actor was sweating and slowly becoming unconscious. An emergency team began cardiac massage, and the actor was shifted to hospital around 4:20 or 4:30 am.
- 2:30 am: Nana Patekar texts a friend that he is unwell.
- 4:00 am: The friend reaches his home and finds him sweating and slipping into unconsciousness.
- 4:20–4:30 am: He is shifted to Manipal Hospital.
- 5:20 am: Doctors declare him dead after about 45 minutes of CPR.
Dr Salkar said the team ‘tried our best, but he was brought dead.’ Because the death was sudden, the hospital filed a medico-legal case, and the body was taken to Goa Medical College for post-mortem.
Why this hits hard
For Hindi cinema fans, Nana Patekar was not a star who needed the trappings of a hero. His face and voice were the event. Whether he was unleashing fury or holding it back, he gave viewers the sense that something real was unfolding on screen. That is the quality Jr NTR pointed to in his tribute, calling his performances ‘life unfolding on screen’ and an artist whose contribution will be remembered for generations.
The family has said his mortal remains are being taken to Pune, and the last rites will be performed at his farmhouse around 4 pm today. Fans looking for a fitting way to remember him need no instruction: go back to the films, and listen carefully.
