Before Shah Rukh Khan began working on King’s song “Tu Mil Jaaye,” he made a request to choreographers Piyush and Shazia: keep me rehearsing until I get it right. The duo recounted the moment in an exclusive conversation with Variety India, recalling that the first rehearsal took place in the actor’s gym. As they remember him saying: “Jab tak main achha nahi karu, please mujhe rehearsal karvate rehna.” Translated, the line is a simple instruction: “Please make me rehearse till I get the steps right.”
The brief: a mood song, not a dance number
Piyush and Shazia said the challenge was to treat “Tu Mil Jaaye” differently from a conventional romantic track. It is, they explained, a mood and vibe song, so the choreography had to stay in that zone while blending romance with the intensity of SRK’s character in the film. The hook step — the repeatable signature move viewers tend to remember — was designed with Shah Rukh in mind. As Piyush put it: “Tu Mil Jaaye is a romantic track, and since SRK is the king of romance, who better to bring those moves to life?”
The song brings together several high-profile names:
- Song: “Tu Mil Jaaye”
- Film: King
- Cast: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone
- Music: Sachin-Jigar
- Vocals: Arijit Singh
- English rap: Ed Sheeran
- Choreography: Piyush-Shazia
- Director: Sidharth Anand
Ed Sheeran’s rap and the Cape Town shoot
Having SRK lip-sync Ed Sheeran’s English verse was always part of the plan, but Piyush said the team had to push him to do it. “SRK, of course, nailed the sync as always,” he added. That detail, alongside Sachin-Jigar’s music and Arijit Singh’s vocals, is being positioned as one of the song’s talking points.
The shoot itself came with weather problems. Shazia said filming took place in Cape Town, South Africa, in harsh winter and strong wind, but the actors and dancers kept the energy up. The choreographers called the song the biggest of their careers so far.
Why this matters for King
For fans, the choreographers’ account signals how King wants to present Shah Rukh Khan. Piyush and Shazia said director Sidharth Anand gave them creative freedom over the song’s flow and visual transitions between romance and action. They also credited SRK for being open to a “young approach” and new visual ideas — a deliberate move toward a fresh SRK experience on screen.
King is scheduled to release on December 24, 2026.
