SRK’s King banks ₹665 cr, must earn ₹800 cr to break even

Pre-release deals touch ₹665 crore, but a reported ₹550 crore landing cost pushes this Christmas release's break-even to around ₹800 crore globally.

SRK's King banks ₹665 cr, needs ₹800 cr to break even

Shah Rukh Khan’s King is still seven weeks from cinemas, but its balance sheet is already making headlines. The Siddharth Anand-directed action film has reportedly locked around ₹665 crore in pre-release deals, setting up one of the biggest theatrical gambles of the Christmas season.

What has already been sold

For a big Hindi film, pre-release sales are how producers de-risk a large canvas. Trade reports cited by Hindustan Times break King’s ₹665 crore into five separate windows.

  • Overseas rights: ₹175 crore from Phars Films as a record minimum guarantee
  • Indian distribution: ₹250 crore to Pen Marudhar
  • Streaming: ₹150 crore to Netflix, with a performance-linked rider
  • Satellite and music: ₹25 crore and ₹65 crore, respectively

The overseas deal is the eye-catcher: the source notes that no Indian film had previously crossed ₹100 crore in that window. Netflix’s clause also means the payout can move up or down with the box office, so even the streaming number is not fully locked.

Why the break-even is the real headline

King was reported to be mounted at ₹300 crore, matching SRK’s Jawan. Trade estimates now put the production cost closer to ₹400 crore. Add roughly ₹50 crore in marketing and Shah Rukh Khan’s notional fee, and the landing cost could reach ₹550 crore.

That changes what “hit” means. The film would need to cross ₹550 crore in net earnings to recover that landing cost. Distributors face a separate ₹425-crore global distribution fee threshold. Since Shah Rukh Khan’s films usually split about 60:40 between domestic and overseas gross, the arithmetic points to roughly ₹400 crore net (₹500 crore gross) in India and ₹150 crore net (₹300 crore gross) overseas. That is a worldwide haul of about ₹800 crore, the territory of Jailer 2 this year and Chhaava last year.

What fans should watch for

King arrives on December 24, 2026, giving it a prime Christmas frame. SRK’s birthday release of the first song on November 2 has started the seven-week countdown. The film is his first since Dunki, and it pairs him for the first time on screen with daughter Suhana Khan, alongside Deepika Padukone, Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan.

The commercial story is simple: the pre-release money is banked, but the box office still has to deliver. The Netflix rider and the ₹425-crore distribution threshold mean every major territory must perform. A strong festive opening, repeat viewing and solid overseas turnout will decide whether ₹665 crore in the bank is a floor or a ceiling.
