Mark Bennington turns writer-director with Dear Tillo

American actor Mark Bennington, seen in Heeramandi, Vibes and Operation Safed Sagar, has added writer, director and producer to his credits with the short film Dear Tillo, in which he also acts.

Speaking at Lucknow Film Festival Season 4, Bennington said the project came from his earlier visit to the city as a jury member. “The seed of this short film was born in Lucknow,” he told Hindustan Times. Watching many short films there gave him a clear sense of what he would make: a universally themed film that is easy to watch and carries a twist at the end.

A role he says no one has seen him in

In Dear Tillo, Bennington plays a regular American professor who comes to India for the first time in search of a former student. When they meet again, the life he had imagined for her is very different from the one she is actually leading.

That distance between expectation and reality is the engine of the story. He arrives with a fixed idea and finds it slowly undone. Bennington notes that this ordinary character is deliberately removed from the kind of roles he is usually offered.

The festival run

He shot the film last year and then handled the edit and sound design in the winter. This year he began submitting it to festivals, and the short has been moving steadily through South Asian and international line-ups.

  • World premiere: Chicago South Asian Film Festival
  • Toronto: International Film Festival South Asia Toronto
  • Mumbai and Pune, where Bennington won the best actor award
  • Lucknow Film Festival Season 4, in the Beyond Borders international section
  • Next: Jaipur and an Indian festival in Florence

What other actors can borrow

Bennington’s route is a contained, low-risk way for actors to try directing. A short film can be shot in a tight window, show a different side on screen, and travel through festivals to build word of mouth before any bigger project is on the table. His jury role was not just a title; it became audience research.

His return to Lucknow was also a live reminder of festival realities. He noticed that the audience two years ago was quiet and attentive, while this year there were conversations and even a video call during the screening. The experience was mixed, he said, though he still watched some good films.

Why it matters

For Hindi film fans, Dear Tillo is a crossover story in two ways: an American actor working across Indian and South Asian festivals, and a tale about expectations meeting a different reality. With Jaipur and Florence still ahead, the short is still making its way around the globe.
