Sara Ali Khan’s latest visit to Kedarnath has turned into a religious controversy after a cleric from Uttar Pradesh objected to the actor offering prayers at the shrine. The actor was reportedly seen standing in the queue at Kedarnath on October 25 and was later spotted outside the temple.
The actor has long been public about her devotion to Lord Shiva and has often shared posts from her Kedarnath visits. This time, however, the visit has drawn a formal objection rather than fan chatter.
What the cleric said
According to media reports, Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi has issued a fatwa over the visit. Speaking to ANI, the cleric said he had received questions from young Muslims about whether Sara’s prayers were permissible in Islam.
His position was direct: for any Muslim man or woman, participating in another religion’s faith, prayers or rituals is “impermissible (najayaz) under Sharia.” He added that if Sara performed these acts of her own free will, it would be an act that is “haram.”
- October 25: Reports place Sara at the Kedarnath shrine.
- The ruling: The cleric calls participation in another faith’s rituals impermissible under Sharia.
- Actor’s side: Sara and her team are yet to respond.
Not the first time
This isn’t the first time Sara’s temple visits or religious identity have drawn criticism. Her debut film Kedarnath, opposite Sushant Singh Rajput, faced objections from right-wing groups in Uttarakhand over its release.
That pattern is what makes the current row bigger than one statement: the actor’s public faith keeps becoming a subject of debate, while her own team has not yet weighed in.
Why it matters
For Bollywood fans, this is another reminder that a star’s personal darshan can become a headline through a religious-political lens, even before the actor responds. The news cycle moves quickly, but the absence of a response leaves the cleric’s framing as the main version of the story so far.
The reports do not mention any legal consequence. The immediate pressure is public: how the actor, her team and the industry choose to respond—or not—will shape the next chapter of this story.
On the work front
Meanwhile, Sara was recently seen in Udta Teer opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, and the film has been winning hearts, according to reports.
