Arun Govil unveiled as King Dashrath in Ramayana poster

The actor a generation grew up watching as Lord Ram is officially back in the Ramayana universe, this time in a very different royal seat. The makers of Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part epic have released a solo poster of Arun Govil as King Dashrath, ruler of Ayodhya and father of Lord Ram.

“He once brought Ram to life for a generation. Now, he returns to the world of Ramayana as the King of Ayodhya.”

The makers’ social-media caption says it plainly. For viewers who grew up with the television Ramayan, Govil is Lord Ram; seeing him as Dashrath is a deliberate full-circle moment.

Why the casting lands

Govil’s face has long been inseparable from the small-screen Ramayan. Moving him from Lord Ram to the father of Ram gives the new film an emotional bridge between an older television memory and the big-screen retelling. The poster leans into that familiarity, showing him in an elaborate royal look suited to the king of Ayodhya.

A familiar face in a new ensemble

Nitesh Tiwari’s film already has a sprawling cast. The new Ramayana pairs Govil with a multi-star ensemble:

  • Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram
  • Sai Pallavi as Sita
  • Yash as Ravana
  • Sunny Deol as Hanuman
  • Ravi Dubey as Lakshman

Arun Govil’s addition gives the project another familiar face that connects the cinematic adaptation to the epic audiences already know.

Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release worldwide on November 5, 2026. Part 2 is slated for Diwali 2027. The film will be presented across India in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and in IMAX.

Prime Focus Studios is producing the film in collaboration with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. Sony Pictures will handle global distribution outside India, while Dharma Productions will distribute it in the Hindi-speaking market.
