Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s Udta Teer has landed in theatres, and the trade is already adding up what the film needs to earn before it can be called a hit.
The box-office math
In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat, trade analyst Rohit Jaiswal placed the film’s budget at around Rs 50 crore. The recovery benchmark sits a little higher. For a clean-hit tag, he said, the picture needs to collect at least Rs 56 crore.
- Below Rs 40 crore: flop
- Rs 56 crore or more: hit
- Beyond Rs 70 crore: super hit
Why the Rs 56 crore mark matters
Box-office verdicts run on a simple principle: a film has to recover its cost and add a margin before it earns a positive label. For Udta Teer, Rs 56 crore is the line between a commercial disappointment and a safe result. The lower boundary is equally clear; anything under Rs 40 crore lands in the flop zone.
On paper, the gap between the budget and the hit target looks narrow: Rs 50 crore invested against Rs 56 crore needed. That gap is the margin the trade watches before it hands out a clean-hit verdict.
Jaiswal added, “The film is quite good, so I believe it should collect at least Rs 56 crore.” That is not just optimism; it sets the benchmark fans and trade watchers will follow through the first weekend.
The film behind the projection
Written and directed by Aakash A. Kaushik in his directorial debut, Udta Teer follows Bilal Ahmed, played by Ayushmann Khurrana. A Pakistani spy loses his memory in India and starts believing he is an Indian counter-terrorism officer. That identity crisis drives a mix of espionage, national security and comedy.
Sara Ali Khan stars alongside Khurrana. The supporting cast includes Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Suhail Nayyar, Gulshan Grover, Mukul Dev, Raghubir Yadav, Brijendra Kala, Sandeep Anand, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Smita Tambe.
The film is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain, bringing Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment together for another collaboration.
The premise is an unusual one for Bollywood, and that makes audience word of mouth the key factor beyond the opening day.
How to read the target
For audiences, these numbers work as a scoreboard. A film can be playing in cinemas and still be judged by its recovery line. The distance between Rs 40 crore and Rs 56 crore is the gap between a flop and a hit verdict. A push past Rs 70 crore changes the conversation again: it would make Udta Teer a super hit.
The target also frames the opening weekend. A strong start can put the film on the path to Rs 56 crore, while a soft opening leaves it fighting to stay away from the flop bracket.
What to watch next
First-day and weekend collections will show whether audience curiosity is converting into ticket sales. Keep an eye on whether Udta Teer can hold above the Rs 56 crore mark, or even stretch towards Rs 70 crore. The opening momentum will set the tone for its commercial run.
