Ram Gopal Varma has named the release date for his next Hindi crime drama. Police Company is set to arrive in cinemas on June 4, 2027, with Harshvardhan Rane in the lead role and T-Series on board as producer.
The film is built around Daya Nayak, described as the well known Mumbai encounter specialist. Where many underworld films begin with the gangster, Varma says this story will look at the officers who fought organised crime.
A return to the encounter years
Varma has spent a large part of his career on stories about crime, gang wars and the Mumbai underworld. With Police Company he is returning to that register, reportedly drawing from real incidents involving encounters with gangsters between 1997 and 2004. For Hindi film fans, that is a loaded period: it is the era in which the line between police work and extra-judicial action became its own kind of drama.
Varma’s framing is sharper than a routine crime thriller. He has described the film as a story about what happens when “a system goes beyond its limits.” The title becomes the argument: when police power is misused, an organised unit can start operating like a criminal company.
What we know so far
- Release date: June 4, 2027, in theatres.
- Lead: Harshvardhan Rane headlines the cast.
- Producer: T-Series is backing the project.
- Source material: Daya Nayak and real encounter incidents from 1997–2004.
- Varma’s slate: Police Station Mein Bhoot, starring Manoj Bajpayee, Ramya Krishnan and Rao Ramesh, is still awaiting its release.
Why the date matters
The announcement gives Varma’s audience something concrete: a mid-2027 theatrical window. It also sets up Police Company as a counterpoint to the gangster-side narratives Hindi cinema has often favoured. The real test is execution—how much of the violence and power Varma is promising actually shows up on screen.
For now, fans of his crime films have a new title to track, and a date to mark. The next update to watch is whether the film releases any first-look material as the date approaches.
