Isha Koppikar Regrets Turning Down Dil Chahta Hai Role

Isha Koppikar says she had to pass on Sonali Kulkarni's Dil Chahta Hai role because of Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat, and the decision still bothers her.

Isha Koppikar on the Dil Chahta Hai role she had to refuse

For every actor, there are films that got away. In a new interview, Isha Koppikar has named hers: Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai. The detail is not that she auditioned and lost the part; it is that she had it and had to let it go.

The offer and the date clash

Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Isha said the role later played by Sonali Kulkarni opposite Saif Ali Khan had first been offered to her. A prior commitment to Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat meant she could not accept. “I regret that decision,” she said.

Released in 2001, Dil Chahta Hai was directed by Farhan Akhtar and brought together Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia. Its cool, conversational take on friendship and heartbreak made it a landmark for younger Hindi film audiences.

Why a casting what-if matters

Bollywood fans often treat finished films as inevitable. Casting near-misses remind us they were not. One actor’s signed dates can redirect a role, and in this case the role became part of a much-discussed ensemble. A “no” from an actor is not always about preference; it can simply be about which contract was signed first.

The business reality is blunt:

  • A prior commitment usually leaves no room to switch.
  • Films are scheduled around availability, not just suitability.
  • A smaller part on release day can become a remembered one years later.

Isha had no way of knowing how Dil Chahta Hai would age. She went on to work in Company, Don, Don 2 and Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi, but the decision still stays with her.

A lesson beyond one project

The interview also touched on creative independence. Isha said financial dependence can push an actor into compromise, and that staying passionate matters more. She began working at 16 and had no industry family to guide her, so choices like this had to be made alone.

That context makes the regret feel less like nostalgia for one movie and more like someone weighing how a career is shaped. An actor with more support might have found a way to juggle both dates; a young outsider often cannot.

Watch the ensemble with fresh eyes

There is no alternate cut with Isha in Dil Chahta Hai, but the confession gives viewers a new way into a familiar film. Sonali Kulkarni’s track opposite Saif Ali Khan is the one to watch: it was nearly someone else’s part, in a film that nearly had a different piece of its puzzle.

Her comments also arrive at a time when Hindi cinema’s 2000s titles are being rediscovered on streaming, where a detail like this turns a rewatch into a game of imagination.
