Ram Gopal Varma is returning to the Mumbai underworld he helped turn into a defining setting for Hindi crime cinema — but this time the camera is on the police. His upcoming saga, Police Company, has locked a nationwide theatrical release for June 4, 2027.
The announcement comes from T-Series and RGV Company Production, who are backing the action thriller inspired by true events from the late 1990s and early 2000s.
A familiar world, a new point of view
Varma built his reputation on gangster-led films such as Satya and Company. Police Company flips the perspective, following the police officers who confronted Mumbai’s gangs. Harshvardhan Rane plays Daya Nayak, the Mumbai police encounter specialist whose operations became part of the city’s underworld history.
The story is expected to explore the encounter squad’s working during a volatile period: the aggressive policing methods, high-stakes operations and circumstances that shaped the fight against organised crime in the financial capital.
For Hindi crime cinema, the underworld has often appeared through the gangster’s rise and fall. By putting law enforcement at the centre, Police Company promises to invert that pattern and make the police the story’s driving force.
Why the 300 figure matters
According to the announcement, the narrative traces operations through which the encounter squad neutralised around 300 gangsters, eventually dismantling the underworld’s terror network in Mumbai. That scope signals a portrait of an era rather than a single operation, told from the side of the officers who carried it out.
Who is on board
Alongside Rane is a strong ensemble: Fardeen Khan, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Makarand Deshpande and Ashwini Kalsekar. Several names have been part of the character-driven crime cinema Varma is associated with, giving the project a sense of continuity with his earlier work.

What to watch for next
The release is well over a year away, so the campaign is at its earliest stage. For fans, the immediate step is to put June 4, 2027 in the calendar. The next signal will be how Varma introduces the film visually: there is no teaser yet, but a first look will show whether Police Company leans into the raw texture of Satya and Company or delivers a new visual language for the encounter era.
For now, the return to the genre that made his name is enough reason to keep this one on the radar.
